The suspects appeared in the Alice Magistrate’s Court in the Eastern Cape on Tuesday.

They are facing a string of charges, including the murders of Mboneli Vesele, who was the bodyguard of vice-chancellor Sakhela Buhlungu, and the fleet manager Petrus Roets who was gunned down in May 2022.

Two of the suspects were arrested in KwaZulu-Natal and three in the Eastern Cape over the Easter weekend.

Police Minister Bheki Cele, who attended the court proceedings on Tuesday, confirmed that some of the accused are employees of the university.

"The suspects work for the university, but they are not junior workers but employees in areas of influence. The case seems to be sophisticated, but police have done the work and the case is solid. We believe the task team has done a good job."

Buhlungu told reporters he expects more arrests to me made.

"We are very happy, relieved that this arrets have happened, it has been long time. I am very certain now that more are going to come, because it cannot be that these suspects did not have aid and abettors when preforming these activities.

"We shall not rest once these people are locked up; this case is a major test for the justice system. If they let these people off then this will be an indicator that we are down on a slippery slope, it is very clear that these people are involved and planned. We look forward to seeing them behind bars for a very long time."
