Johannesburg‘s emergency services received 15 new fire engines last month amid the concern over the city’s lack of firefighting equipment.

Mashaba said the purchase of this magnitude is unprecedented in the history of any municipalities in the country.

He believes the new vehicles will benefit communities around the city, specifically informal settles which suffers from a lack of infrastructure.

“I’m sure all of you are aware of the fires that all the time destroy our communities,” said Mashaba.

The mayor was speaking at the delivery ceremony at Florida Fire Station, west Johannesburg on Wednesday.

The mayor said more fire engines will be delivered at the end of the month.

Eskom warns: 'system very constrained'

Eskom has warned consumers that the electricity supply system is "very constrained'. On Tuesday, Eskom said on social media that the probability of load shedding was low, but this assurance was not given to the public on Wednesday.

The city’s MMC for Public Safety Michael Sun also launched a new emergency number.

The new number for the city is 107.

While residents will have to use the new number in the future, the previous emergency numbers will not be scrapped.

“It’s simples and easy to remember, it is the number we are going to use moving forward... use the number when you want the metro police and fire services,” said Sun.
