Day 1 of matric exams sees 5 provinces report Covid-19 cases

Five provinces experienced Covid-19 cases among their grade 12 pupils as they headed into their first matric exam paper on Thursday.
Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga confirmed that KwaZulu-Natal, the Free State, Eastern Cape, Gauteng and Limpopo all has confirmed cases of Covid-19.
Motshekga said health and hygiene protocols in the handling of all the cases.
“In KwaZulu-Natal, three learners reported their diagnosis to the school authorities and used a separate gate to enter the school premises.

“They were accommodated in a separate isolation room and provided with an invigilator who observed the health and hygiene protocols at all times.
“We are encouraged by the level of maturity and responsibility shown by our candidates in KwaZulu-Natal.”
Meanwhile, the department said it is satisfied with day one of the exams.
“The Department of Basic Education is pleased to announce that the first day of the National Senior Certificate examinations has gone well without any major incidents throughout the country,” said Motshekga.
The class of 2020 will write Afrikaans paper I on Friday.
