Acting on a tip-off, the Hawks and several other law enforcement agencies swooped on the suspects, who were driving in two cars.
Hawks' spokesperson Katlego Mogale says the two vehicles were seen in Carletonville driving around various banks.
"As they left the Carletonville area, the integrated law enforcement team tactically proceeded to try and stop the suspects who, upon realising that they are being pulled over, opened fire on law enforcement team comprising of the Hawks Tactical Operations Management Section, Gauteng Traffic Saturation unit, Gauteng Traffic Chopper, MDOC CI CIT Team, PHO Crime Intelligence, Tracker Connect, CAP Specialised Operations, FRS-Falcon Risk Solutions, Badboyz Security, ABSA Investigation and Insurance Crime Bureau," she said.
Mogale says In the ensuing shootout, five of the suspects were shot dead, and a woman was arrested.
She added that the suspects' vehicles have been positively linked to three cases in Groblersdal, Secunda, and Hercules.
