Five suspected CIT robbers arrested in Free State

Police have arrested five suspected cash-in-transit robbers following a shoot-out in Vrede in the Free State on Tuesday.

The heavily armed gang was intercepted while on their way to commit a cash in transit robbery in KwaZulu-Natal.


The suspects opened fire on police and one security officer was gunned down during the shooting.


Police have launched a manhunt for a group of suspects who managed to escape.


Police spokesperson Athlenda Mathe says an AK47, R5, 240 rounds of high calibre ammunition were recovered.


"Police were following up on intelligence when a shootout ensued between police and suspects. 


"Unfortunately, a 40-year-old security officer was shot and killed when the suspects who were travelling in a dodge sedan opened fire."


Mathe says the suspects' car was reported hijacked in Centurion. 


"At the scene, two suspects were injured and arrested. Another group of suspects were intercepted in Memela about 52km from Vrede. 


"Three suspects were arrested and some got away, manhunt has since been launched for those who fled the scene. At this scene, two Mercedes Benz sedans were recovered and one has already been detected as stolen."
