Police in Gauteng have launched a manhunt for at least four suspects who robbed Transport Minister Sindisiwe Chikunga and her two bodyguards of their personal belongings.
The incident took place on the N3 between Vosloorus and Heidelberg on Monday morning.
According to a statement released by the Department of Transport on Tuesday, the tyres of Chikunga’s car were punctured by spikes placed on the road.
Police spokesperson Athlenda Mathe said Chikunga and her bodyguards were robbed of their personal belongings, as well as two SAPS service pistols.
“Members involved are receiving necessary support and counselling. The minister has, in the meantime, been provided with alternative resources.
“The police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.”
Transport Department spokesperson Collen Msibi confirmed the minister emerged from the incident unscathed.
“Both the minister and her dedicated SAPS protection team emerged from this incident unharmed and safe. Minister Chikunga remains committed to fulfilling her government responsibilities and is deeply grateful for the overwhelming support she has received from her fellow government colleagues and the people of South Africa.”
