The stadium Management has raised concerns over the parking capacity at the FNB stadium ahead of the Soweto Derby on Saturday, urging patrons to use the park and ride systems put in place to decrease traffic volume.

In the past, the FNB stadium has seen high traffic volumes, causing delays due to cars that exceed the parking space at the stadium.

This weekend, Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates Football Club will play against each other in a Betway Premiership match.

Over 90,000 people are expected to attend Saturday's derby clash.

Despite efforts by the Johannesburg Metro Police Department and the Stadium Management of South Africa, the FNB Stadium has continued to see rising traffic volumes and vehicles that exceed its 15,000 formal parking bays.

In a statement, the stadium management said they acknowledge a shortfall of at least 4,000 parking bays based on historic vehicle volumes for previous Derbies, saying the stadium was never designed to support high-volume private vehicle access.

The management has encouraged patrons to use the available park and ride systems from Clearwater Mall, Montecasino, and Sandton City.

“These services are designed to be fast, secure, efficient, and cost-effective, providing fans with a convenient way to access the stadium while significantly reducing congestion around the venue.”

They added that an express Parking option at Gold Reef City Casino and Southgate Mall is available.

“Park undercover at Gold Reef City Casino or Southgate Mall and hop on a dedicated shuttle straight to the stadium. Your ticket covers parking and the return shuttle.”

The management has advised some motorists to use free park and ride systems that are designed to minimise traffic and patron frustration.

“Leave your car at Clearwater Mall, Montecasino, or Sandton City and take a convenient shuttle directly to FNB Stadium.”
