COMMUNITY SAFETY

THE SOAPBOX: What's the view from residents?

Here's Gauteng Community Safety MEC Sizakele Nkosi-Malobane talking about a range of matters close to your heart - including the recent spate of violence against women:

5 things you need to know about community safety in Gauteng

- Crime is cited as the most common problem affecting communities.

- Gauteng had the highest percentage of households that felt violent crime had decreased in their areas.

- To combat crimes against women and children, 257 women safety desks have been established.

- The number of forensic social workers has increased to 91 in 2016.

- The number of Men as Safety Promoters groups increased to 600 by the end of 2016, mobilising men in the fight against gender-based violence.

Gauteng Premier David Makhura on policing in the province:

"We will prioritise bringing back visible policing and specialised units. There must be real progress in closure of drug dens and the arrest and prosecution of drug lords and a serious decline in crimes perpetrated against the most vulnerable in our communities. There must be collaboration and partnerships between SAPS, Metro Police and the entire criminal justice system so that we root out criminals in our communities."
