A 28-year-old former First National Bank employee has been arrested by the Hawks for allegedly stealing almost R37m from a deceased client.
Thabiso Matenda, who worked as a consultant at FNB’s branch in Makhado, allegedly withdrew almost R37m from a deceased client’s bank account.
Spokesperson for the Hawks in Limpopo, Matimba Maluleke, says Matenda was remanded in custody following his appearance in court.
“It is alleged that on April 25, the suspect who was an FNB consultant opened the profile of the client who had just died in a vehicle accident a day before without any authorisation.
“During the investigation, it was discovered that some of the stolen money was used to buy expensive cars and donate to a certain church,” said Maluleke
The case was postponed to 17 June for a formal bail application.
