Former Limpopo officials granted R30k bail in VBS case

More state officials implicated in the VBS scandal have been hauled before the court for their alleged part in the disastrous looting of the now defunct mutual bank.
The arrested officials include former mayor of Thulamela municipality in Limpopo, Avhashoni Tshifhango and municipal manager Hlengani Maluleke.
On Thursday, the pair appeared in the Polokwane Specialised Commercial Crimes Court facing allegations of corruption and maladministration linked to VBS.
The 52-year-old municipal manager invested R30 million of municipality money into VBS, in contravention of the Municipal Finance Management Act.
This while 49-year-old Tshifhango allegedly received a car valued at over R600 000 from the Director of VBS, as gratification for the investment made by the municipality.
Provincial spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority Mashudu Malabi-Dzhangi confirmed the two were granted bail of R30 000 each.
“The matter has been postponed to 20 July 2022, to set a pre-trial date.”
At least 20 municipalities in Limpopo, North West and Gauteng, lost R1.6 billion after illegally investing with the bank.
The bank was liquidated in 2018.
