The Kuruman Specialised Commercial Crimes Court has slapped a former municipal councillor with a four-year sentence for corruption.
Julia Katong was found guilty on four counts of corruption after demanding R14 500 and tyres in kickbacks.
The 53-year-old woman is a former ANC councillor at the Joe Morolong municipality in Northern Cape.
She was arrested by the Hawks in June 2020.
"During 2019, the complainant received a contract to provide transport services for construction workers of Down Touch Investment,” said Hawks Northern Cape spokesperson Tebogo Thebe.
"The complainant was then approached by the former councillor and demanded vehicle tyres as a form of gratitude in order for her not to terminate the contract.
"The accused further demanded monthly cash payments from complainant. R14 500 was paid by the complainant to the accused in order to keep the contract.
"The complainant could not make further payments to the accused, so she threatened to have his contract terminated."
