Former president Zuma a free man again
Updated | By Anastasi Mokgobu
The Department of Correctional Services has confirmed that former president Jacob Zuma has been officially released from the prison system.
The Constitutional Court sentenced Zuma to 15 months in jail for contempt of court after failing to appear before the commission of inquiry into state capture.
He spent two months at Estcourt Correctional Centre last year and was later granted medical parole to complete his sentence at home.
However, the Supreme Court of Appeal still needs to rule on the decision by former prisons boss Arthur Fraser to release Zuma' on medical parole.
The decision has been declared unlawful by the High Court
Zuma approached the apex court to challenge the ruling - which also found that the time he spent on medical parole should not be counted towards fulfilling his sentence.
Friday would've marked the official end of his sentence if he had not been granted medical parole.
Correctional Services spokesperson Singabakho Nxumalo says he is now officially out of the system after complying with the medical parole conditions.
"Mr Zuma complied with his conditions for medical parole as set out during his placement. All administrative processes have now been concluded and the Sentence Expiry Date marks the end of him serving his sentence under community corrections.”
