Police in the Free State are hunting for an unknown number of armed suspects who gunned down one of their colleagues in Wepener.
The 22-year-old constable died after he was shot in the upper body during a business robbery on Tuesday night.
A second police officer was wounded during the shooting and is recovering in hospital.
Provincial police spokesperson Motantsi Makhele says the two police officers responded to reports of an armed robbery at a local supermarket.
“The members heard gunshots from De Wet Street and rushed to check if it wasn't the suspects from the reported robbery. Suspects started firing shots at the police and the police returned fire. The paramedics declared the constable dead on the scene."
The suspects fled with the two officers’ firearms.
