Officials from the Free State provincial government met on Sunday to review the interventions put in place to curb the spread of diarrhoea and cholera in the province.
This follows a spike in the cholera outbreak which has killed at least 12 people in the country.
Six people, who were confirmed positive in the Free State, received treatment at Parys Hospital and Boitumelo Hospital in Kroonstad.
“The Free State MEC for Health, Ms. Mathabo Leeto facilitated a multi-sectoral meeting inclusive of Executive Mayors of Fezile Dabi, Ngwathe and Councillors with the District Outbreak Response Teams and Development Partners on Sunday afternoon. The meeting heard that about 76 people were seen at various Clinics and hospitals in the District with Diarrhoeal infections” said the provincial Health Department spokesperson Mondli Mvambi.
Mvambi says the response teams were deployed after the first confirmed case on 17 May.
“The teams working in Vredefort and Ngwathe, in general, are continuously monitoring the quality of water for all water sources supplying water to the community. Environmental risk assessments are also ongoing.”
The Free State is at the centre of the country, connecting Gauteng, Mpumalanga, Eastern Cape, KZN, Northern Cape, North West and the Kingdom of Lesotho.
