FUL: Abrahams' suspension must be implemented
Updated | By Marius van der Walt
Freedom Under Law (FUL) will write to President Cyril Ramaphosa asking him to suspend National Director of Public Prosecutions (NDPP) Shaun Abrahams.
This follows the renewed charges against South African Revenue Services (Sars) officials Ivan Pillay, Johann van Loggerenberg and Andries Janse van Rensburg. The three have been issued summonses to appear in the Pretoria Regional Court in April on charges of corruption and contravention of the Rica Act.
The charges relate to the so-called Sars rogue unit, which is accused of taking part in illegal interceptions and spying.
Former Constitutional Court judge Johann Kriegler says the renewed charges are malicious and groundless.
"We are going to be in touch with the presidency to ask the president to implement the suspension that was ordered by the High Court in Pretoria some months ago."
The court last year declared that Abrahams should vacate his office after it found that former president Jacob Zuma had unlawfully removed Abrahams' predecessor, former NDPP Mxolisi Nxasana.
Kriegler also believes Sars commissioner Tom Moyane is part of the move to reinstitute the charges.
"I do believe Mr Tom Moyane is behind it. That is borne out firstly by the fact that the summons and the particular case bears the original number of the charges laid by Mr Moyane at the Brooklyn Police Station in 2015."
The three former officials are set to make their first court appearance in April.
