Ga-Rankuwa shebeen ‘was operating illegally’ during deadly shooting
Updated | By Makhosazane Twala
Police in Gauteng are searching for an unknown number of suspects who shot and killed two people at a shebeen in Ga-Rankuwa, north of Pretoria.

Seven others were wounded in Friday night’s shooting.
While the motive for the shooting remains unclear, Gauteng Liqour Forum spokesperson Fanny Mokoena says the shebeen was operating illegally.
“There is a Liquor Act in all the provinces. In Gauteng we have Liquor Act of 2003 which says you cannot operate without a licence.
“The police must do their work and close it down together with the liquor board because I have confirmed that it not a legal shebeen. As an association, we work with legal registered shebeen and communicate safe and legal ways to run a liquor outlet. But if the shebeen is not legal it is hard for us to locate them.
“The police need to do their part, we do not have authority to say who can and cannot operate, we only assist to operate within lawful perimeters.”
