Gas cylinders explode during Knysna taxi rank fire
Updated | By Algoa FM
Two gas cylinders have exploded at the Knysna taxi rank after stalls in the area caught fire.
Knysna municipal spokesperson Nwabisa Pondoyi says the fire and explosion have caused extensive damage to structures.
Pondoyi says five vehicles from the Knysna Fire Services were dispatched to the area early on Thursday morning.
She says the fire resulted in two 3kg gas cylinders exploding.
Fortunately there were no injuries.
Knysna's ward-10 DA councillor Peter Bester told AlgoaFM News that he went to the taxi rank to see what had happened.
He says when he got there the stalls were still burning.
He says eyewitnesses told him that the fire started because of people who sleep behind the stalls and pass out after using drugs, leaving their open fires unattended.
Bester says before someone gets killed, the municipality and the mayor need to rid the taxi rank of drugs and people sleeping there.
He also called for these open stalls to be replaced with containers or modular units that each stall holder can lock up at night.
