Gauteng adds 35 new vaccination sites as province leads with active Covid cases

Gauteng has added 35 new vaccination sites in an effort to ramp up its Covid-19 inoculation drive.

Last week the province opened the first week of the vaccination drive with 28 sites open for business.

 

In the second week, Johannesburg opened an additional 18 sites, while Tshwane and Ekurhuleni added 14 each, the West Rand 10 qpand 7 in Sedibeng. 

 

This brings the tally to 63 sites across the 5 districts. 

 

“As of Saturday, 22 May 2021, 40 028 people were vaccinated at Old Age Homes and health facilities across the province. To date, 164 191 people, including healthcare workers have been vaccinated, with 390 945 registered on the Electronic Vaccination Data System (EVDS) platform,” says Gauteng Health spokesperson Kwara Kekana. 

 

“Phase 1B of the vaccination programme is focusing on healthcare workers, traditional practitioners and funeral parlour employees, while Phase 2 of the programme is prioritising persons who are 60 years and older, as they are more vulnerable to serious illness, hospitalisation and death, in the event they contract Covid-19.”

 

The number of active Covid-19 cases in South Africa breached the 40 000 mark on Sunday night.

 

Gauteng is the leading province with the most active cases at 11 144, followed by the Northern Cape at 7 579 and the Free State at 7 093.

 

The number of deaths have increased by a further 30 with the total officially standing at 55 802.
