Gauteng Education probing claims of abuse at Pretoria crèche
Updated | By Cliff Shiko
The Gauteng Department of Education says it is investigating claims of children being beaten by caregivers at Darwin’s Educational Playground Aftercare Créche in Pretoria.
A video, which was widely shared on social media, shows two caregivers beating toddlers at the school, while some are crying during day-care sessions.
The centre is operated by a mother and her two children.
The video footage was captured by an employee who has since resigned, citing the emotional toll on her following the ordeal.
Two cases of assault have also been opened at Hercules Police Station.
Spokesperson Steve Mabona says they have started engaging with affected parents and offering the necessary support.
"The affected parents are not using the centre anymore but we continue with our investigation and make sure that in the event the process of registering is not complete, we assist the centre because we don't want to jeopardise children.
“The investigation will tell us what to do going forward and we are also monitoring the investigation by the police."
