Various schools in the province have been affected by gang-related violence, as well as violence within school premises.

Chiloane said his department is working with law enforcement agencies to ensure all schools are safe.

"Regarding school safety, We ran a programme that was very successful. We deployed security officers in our schools during the day and night.

"We have collaborated with SAPS and crime wardens. We search our pupils every morning when they get to school. We started the programme in 75 schools, and those schools stabilised, and parents and pupils started coming forward.

"Our kids have started feeling safer in our schools,” said Chiloane.

Chiloane addressed the media during a back-to-school visit at Kgatontle Secondary School in Ga Rankuwa on Wednesday.
