This includes organisations that deal with orphans, vulnerable children, people living with disabilities, shelters for victims of gender-based violence, and people with mental illness amongst other organisations.

Earlier this year Premier Panyaza Lesufi announced that they will be reviewing if the R2,3 billion budget is being used correctly for the sector and whether it is used for its intended purpose.

“The NGO sector has played a critical role in partnering with the government in caring for the vulnerable in our society. I am confident that we will find each other in the sector,” Lesufi said.

Spokesperson Vuyo Mhaga says the premier will convene a budget committee to address the issue of funding elevated priorities.

On Thursday Lesufi and Social Development MEC Mbali Hlophe will meet with the sector to discuss the modalities of the new funding model and other issues affecting the sector.

In 2015, the provincial government terminated its contract with the Life Esidimeni care centre which led to the deaths of more than 140 mental health patients.
