In 2015, the AARTO bill was introduced to Parliament for deliberation in an attempt to counteract rising death tolls as a result of reckless driving on the country's roads.

The AARTO Act brings with it adjustments to existing road traffic laws and will introduce the much talked about Point Demerit system.

Penalties will also be communicated electronically to violators.

Minister Fikile Mbalula addressed the media at a road block north of Tshwane on Sunday, where he confirced traffic violators will receive a 'demerit' penalty per traffic offence in order to identify reckless drivers.

"Common penalties, small traffic violation throughout the country will carry the same penal values," said the Minister.

"Electronic service: This means that now law enforcement can be effectively supported by technology servicing documents by electronic means," said Mbalula.

The AARTO Act allows for the suspension of a driver's license, while drivers who have lost all 12 of their points will also have to undergo 'Driver's Rehabilitation'.

However, citizens will be able to appeal penalties.

Implementation now awaits the law being gazetted after which a  commencement date will be announced.
