Gauteng motorists warned of slippery roads amid cold snap

Emergency services in Johannesburg and Tshwane have warned motorists to exercise caution amid wet and windy conditions in Gauteng on Monday.

On Sunday, the South African Weather Service warned of a cold snap over parts of the country this week.

Several parts of the country are experiencing a cold snap with severe thunderstorms expected to hit Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, Mpumalanga, Limpopo, North West and the Free State.

The N3 Toll Concession has issued a road safety alert for motorists making their way along the national route due to rain, sleet and light snowfall reported between Van Reenen Pass and Warden.

“It’s raining in most parts of the city of Johannesburg. Most roads are wet and slippery. Motorists are urged to exercise caution while driving, keep to the prescribed speed limit and also extend a safe following distance, avoid crossing areas which might be flooded,” said Joburg EMS spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi.

“Our residents in our low-lying areas are urged to avoid crossing river streams and also to monitor young kids to stay away from river streams. As the Joburg EMS, we remain on high alert together with our specialised water-related unit to make sure that we can be able to respond to all the emergencies which might occur throughout Johannesburg.”

Tshwane EMS spokesperson Charles Mabaso echoed the message.

“We would like to make a plea to the motorists to remain vigilant during the inclement weather conditions, where roads might be slippery, particularly in the city centre, as October is a period when you have Jacaranda trees blooming with a lot of flowers falling on the ground which may exacerbate slippery road conditions.

“It is advisable to keep your headlamps on to increase visibility and make sure that the following distance is such that you are able to bring the vehicle to a stop safely and make sure that you follow the weather conditions as reported by the South African Weather Service in case of storms that we may experience.”
