The provincial Department of Education has urged parents to respond to placement offers in order to secure their children's seat for the 2017 academic year.

Gauteng Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi briefed media Monday morning on progress made regarding 2017 learner placements and the rollout of the ICT programme in all no fee schools in the province.

Placement of learners is moving slowly, partly due to parents not confirming whether they've accepted or rejected the offer by the schools.

Lesufi says the department hopes to complete this process by the 7 September.

"Out of 129 759 learners that we need to place, 56 844 learners know where they are going next year. The numbers are too low," Lesufi said.

Lesufi added that some 29 000 applicants who registered after the closing date in June would be placed by 16 November.

"We are placing those who applied on time first. We've got until 7 September to place them and thereafter we will deal with late registration, but at the beginning of the year no-no."
