Placement of Gauteng learners progressing: MEC
Updated | By Slindelo Masikane
Sixty three percent of schools in Gauteng have provided space to learners in grades one and eight for the 2017 academic year.

Parents have been urged to apply for space until 1 June using the online application process.
Gauteng Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi briefed the media on Monday on progress made regarding 2017 learner placements and the rollout of the ICT programme in all no fee schools in Gauteng.
The department is currently placing more learners and anticipates that the process will be done by 7 September.
So far only 56 000 learners have been placed, which translates to 44 percent.
Over 72 000 applications are still pending.
"The numbers are too low, but they are very important to us, because it starts to clear all the things that made us introduce online registration. For example, we know where to order extra furniture. We know where to order extra textbooks. We know where to appoint new teachers. We know where to build new schools. The picture is starting to develop," Lesufi said.
The numbers at the moment exclude late applications, but Lesufi has made it clear that no admissions would be processed in January.
"Our approach is very simple. We are placing those who applied on time first. We've got until 7 September to place them and thereafter we will deal with late registration."
