Gauteng police nab suspect for Soweto taxi violence

Gauteng police have arrested a man in connection with the ongoing taxi violence in Soweto.

The suspect is a local taxi operator.
The violence between two taxi associations interrupted the taxi service in Dube on Thursday and Friday.
Gauteng Traffic Police spokesperson Obed Sibasa says members of the two associations were involved in an exchange of gunfire.
No fatalities were reported.
“There have been reports of taxi violence since Thursday to early Friday in Soweto which resulted in both associations withdrawing their services from operating,” says Sibasa.
“No fatalities were reported, one taxi operator was arrested and more arrests expected. The situation is under control and law enforcement agencies including public transport intervention unit are monitoring the situation.”
He has urged commuters to make use of alternative transport.
