Gautrain wage talks deadlock yet again

Wage negotiations between Gautrain's Bombela Operating Company and the United National Transport Union (UNTU) have deadlocked yet again.

Bombela spokesperson Kesagee Nayager says UNTU abandoned discussions after it rejected two new offers by the company.

"Both offers made provision for an incentive bonus, which UNTU had been requesting. In fact there were three offers. All three offers have made provision for an incentive bonus," says Nayager.

She adds the company has received a new proposal from UNTU.

"Which now equates to an increase of 16.9 percent instead of the original 19,9 percent."

Earlier UNTU told Jacaranda FM News that striking Gautrain workers had lowered their wage demand to 9 percent across the board.

UNTU's Steve Harris has described the new three-year offer by Gautrain as 'arrogant.'

"The trust relations between the employee and employer is so bad, that they mustn't even consider bringing such rubbish to the negotiation table," says Harris.

He adds the workers strike continues until both parties reaches an agreement.
