The death toll from the building collapse in George in the Southern Cape has risen to 16.
Two more bodies were discovered by rescue workers in the early hours of Sunday morning.
Rescue operations continued on Sunday, with emergency services searching for another 37 missing people.
Speaking to the media at the scene of the collapse, George Mayor Leon van Wyk said the women of the local community continue to assist with the search, even though it is Mother’s Day.
“We have to remove the rubble meticulously and very delicately in case there are any persons who are still alive around us.
“There are people that have been working on-site, and we have come and offered donations and brought food so that these teams can keep on working.
“We also feel for the families are still waiting, and we extend our condolences to everyone who has lost a family member. It must be a very frightening experience for the families sitting here waiting, not knowing whether they are going to see their loved ones again,” added Van Wyk.
