Getting rid of Zuma 'beneficial' to ANC, says analyst

A political analyst says it's not surprising that Jacob Zuma's been summoned to Luthuli House.

The former president is expected to appear before the ANC's Disciplinary Committee on Tuesday.

"The ANC is committed to a process of renewal and many people have called into question whether the ANC is ready to renew itself, getting rid of some who've been on the wrong side of corruption," says analyst Imraan Buccus.

The ANC on Thursday confirmed Zuma's scheduled appearance next week.

He has been charged with contravening the organisation's constitution by endorsing the uMkhonto weSizwe political party, and for appearing on its candidate list.

The 82-year-old Zuma was suspended in January after declaring his support for the MK group.

He's currently still a member of the ANC.

Buccus says a move like this would align with the party's election plans.

"Some months ago Zuma would've been seen as a figure that could've been used to garner support for the ANC, and now he has become a hinderance.

"I think the sooner the ANC gets rid of Zuma completely and the sooner the name Zuma is not associated with the ANC is actually better and beneficial for them."
