Gigaba: We are engaging Public Protector over SARB mandate
Updated | By Jacaranda FM news
Finance Minister Malusi Gigaba says Public Protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane doesn't have the power to direct Parliament to amend the Constitution.
Minister Gigaba was addressing the Progressive Business Forum in Nasrec this morning, ahead of the start of the ANC's policy conference.
"My office is currently engaging with the office of the Public Protector to understand her recent recommendations in regards to the South African Reserve Bank."
Gigaba says if Mkhwebane wanted an amendment then she should have contacted the Department of Finance.
In a recent report on money given to Absa's predecessor Bankorp by the apartheid government, Mkhwebane said the scope of the central bank's mandate should be extended to include socio-economic development.
