Police Ministry spokesperson Vuyo Mhaga says the arrest of a police officer in connection with the murder is proof of the commitment to rid the police of the rot in their ranks.
''We've always said that we'll get rid of all the criminal elements within our ranks.
''We've never denied that some amongst us are rotten potatoes.”
KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Jay Naicker says the arrests were carried out during co-ordinated pre-dawn raids at the Glebelands hostel, Harding and the Durban Central police station.
More than 90 people have been killed at the Umlazi hostel in the last three years.
