Goldberg had unwavering faith in the ANC, says Ramaphosa

President Cyril Ramaphosa says the late Denis Goldberg never lost faith in the African National Congress (ANC), even when the party faltered.

The memorial service for the late anti-apartheid activist and struggle stalwart was held online on Friday afternoon to adhere to Covid-19 social distancing guidelines.

The 87-year-old - who died of cancer last week - was one of the only two surviving Rivonia Treason trialists.

Ramaphosa was among the speakers who honoured the struggle icon.

"He was a man and a leader of unquestionable integrity. Reminding us that leadership is a weighty responsibility," Ramaphosa said.

"He never lost faith in the organisation nor did he renounce it when he saw it falter and make many serious mistakes.

"He wanted to see the ANC thrive and prospers, to learn from its mistakes and to correct them, even when it seemed that the organisation was being torn apart.”

Ramaphosa said the country is facing hardships that will place a heavy burden on the people.

"We will have to rebuild our shattered society, transform our economy and transform our collective misfortune as people.

"Our people will rely on their ANC to lead them during this time of great peril.

"Now is the time for Denis Goldberg's ANC to remain united. To reassert its commitment to its mission and to continue to renew itself."
