Government must nationalise Educor colleges, says SAFTU

The South African Federation of Trade Unions has called on government to nationalise all Educor colleges.
This comes after Higher Education Blade Nzimande Minister yesterday announced the deregistration of its institutional subsidiaries which include City Varsity, Lyceum, Damelin and ICESA City Campus.
The minister said during a media briefing the higher learning institution failed to submit its 2021/2 audited annual statements to the department.
“Further, they have had various allegations levelled against them, including complaints about the quality of education and non-payment of staff”, he added.
Nzimande said the colleges have been given until the end of the year to phase out current enrolled students and no students may be registered.

"SAFTU demands the department not to dump students who were mid-way in pursuing their studies and the workers who worked at these institutions, from cleaners and security to lecturers and admin staff. The department must nationalize these colleges and absorb the workers permanently," said SAFTU's spokesperson Trevor Shaku.
"After all, public higher education institutions do not have the adequate capacity to absorb matriculants and learners who want to pursue further education and training. It is only befitting to nationalise these institutions (Educor institutions) as part of expanding its capacity," he added.
