Government not at war with itself: Zuma

President Jacob Zuma believes South Africa has a functioning democracy and says government is not at war with itself.

This in response to questions in Parliament.

The president was answering questions in Parliament on Tuesday on a range of issues, including state-owned enterprises as well as the economy in general.

He also responded to questions about a possible downgrade.

"The economy is picking up. I don't know why should the rating agencies move against the facts as it were, because I think they look at how the economy's performing and how, also, the country itself is," he said,

The President also contradicted his deputy, Cyril Ramaphosa, who recently stated that government is at war with itself.

"There is one matter I'm attending to of Minister [Mosebenzi] Zwane. I'm engaging Minister Zwane on what he said. Now, I don't think we should balloon that as if there is war in government. There isn't," he said.

President Zuma also raised concerns about how he's treated in the National Assembly.

"Each time I come here, I am abused by members of your Parliament. Instead of answering questions, I sit here being called a criminal, a thief. I think this House must do something about it."
