Govt appeal against load shedding ruling 'irrational'

Mmusi Maimane says the government's decision to challenge a court order for hospitals to receive an exemption from load shedding is irrational.
The Build One SA leader's been reacting to the announcement by Public Enterprises Minister Pravin Gordhan, that his department will lodge an urgent appeal.
"Minister Pravin Gordhan, I want to tell you straight, sir, that next time a child dies in hospital because ultimately incubators are not working - that next time crime goes up during load shedding and that children cannot study during load shedding, it is on your hands," Maimane said.
"You and your government are insisting that even in these difficult times, you will not provide alternative energy for police stations."
Last week, the High Court in Pretoria ordered the government to take reasonable steps to exempt hospitals, clinics, police stations and schools from blackouts - within 60 days.
The application was brought by various political parties, including BOSA and civic groups.
Eskom says its legal team is still studying the judgment.
