South Africa celebrates Transport Month every October.

The Aarto Act was signed into law by President Cyril Ramaphosa in August.

The act states that if a driver has 12 demerits their license will be suspended for a period of three months for each point that is above the threshold.

This means if a motorists has 14 demerit points, the license will be suspended for a period of 6 months.

If a driver goes for three months without committing any driving violations, the Road Traffic Infringement Agency (RTIA) will recognise the good behaviour by reducing the penalty with one demerit point every three months.

A motorist could also apply for one of the rehabilitation programmes if they want to speed up the reinstatement of their licenses.

The department’s director-general Alec Moemi says Transport Minister Fikile Mbalula will lead the educational roadshows.

"We'll also began an educational campaign on Aarto. We will educating citizens and issuing messages more often.

“The campaign will see the minister going to major truck stops."
