Govt must stay away from Eskom CEO appointment – expert

Energy expert Tshepo Kgadima says government should have no say in the appointment of a new Eskom CEO.
The state-owned entity announced the resignation of current CEO André de Ruyter on Wednesday.
He is due to stay on at the power utility until March 2023 while the government searches for a successor.
Kgadima says the process of appointing De Ruyter’s successor should be as transparent as possible.
“The person to take De Ruyter’s position must be interviewed through a public process. They must not be interviewed by the minister because he has demonstrated to collapse SEOs through every single appointment.
“Minister (of Public Enterprises Pravin) Gordhan should have no say or role to play in the recruitment of the new CEO, and the process must be done publicly so South Africans know that the person appointed has the right skills, education, experience, and the ability to lead at the highest level that Eskom requires.
“They must demonstrate that, within a 90-day period, they will take necessary decisions to end rolling blackouts.”
Kgadima says Eskom is on the verge of dipping below 20 000MW available capacity.
“My message to South Africans during this festive season and approaching Christmas with this current regime; do not hope for the best, but rather prepare for the worst because the collapse of the electricity grid is imminent.
“The grid will collapse. Eskom is on the verge of less than 20 000MW of capacity generated, on that level the grid is bound to collapse.”
