Govt reduces time between Covid-19 jabs, allow mixing of boosters

The Department of Health has introduced changes to its Covid-19 vaccination programme, including a reduction of the time interval between first and second doses of Pfizer vaccine.

The new changes will be effective from Wednesday.

The department says all individuals who are fully vaccinated with the Pfizer vaccine will now be eligible for booster dose three months after the second dose.

Initially, the waiting period before the booster shot was six months.

Spokesperson Foster Mohale says South Africans will also be allowed to mix between Johnson & Johnson and Pfizer booster shots.

“The decision regarding which vaccine to administer as a booster should be guided by vaccine availability. Thus, if both vaccines are available at the vaccination site, homologous boosting should be preferred, unless the vaccinee requests to receive a heterologous or different booster dose, or has a history of experiencing an adverse event following immunisation.

“However, people are reminded that all adverse events following immunisation must be reported to their nearest vaccination site.”
