Gungubele briefed the media on Thursday morning following the cabinet meeting which was held the previous day.

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine is entering its third week.

Various countries, including South Africa, have called for peaceful negotiations, although South Africa voted against a UN resolution condemning Russia’s invasion.

Gungubele said the socio-economic impact of the war will be felt by ordinary people around the world.

“Cabinet calls for a negotiated diplomatic solution and urged all parties to uphold and protect human rights, and abide by their obligations in terms of international law and international humanitarian law.”

Gungubele said government continues to assist South African citizens to leave Ukraine amid criticism that it is not moving with the necessary speed.

The war has seen scores of foreign students and other nationals crossing into neighbouring countries like Hungary, Poland, Romania and Slovakia.

The Department of International Relations and Corporation will evacuate some 25 South African student from the war-torn country.

“Government continues to assist South African citizens to leave Ukraine and a number of them have since returned home. We have also expressed our concern about the ill-treatment of Africans trying to cross international borders during this time.

“We believe that developing countries must enjoy a greater share of voice and influence in institutions of global governance. South Africa, therefore, advocates for a more equitable international system and for the reform of multilateral institutions to promote greater equality,” said Gungubele.
