Govt slashes ministerial perks
Updated | By Sibahle Motha
Members of the executive will now have to do with less benefits as the Department of Public Service and Administration tries to curb costs in all government departments.
Minister Senzo Mchunu launched the new ministerial handbook for members of the executive in Tshwane on Monday.
Ministers will now have to do without security upgrades at their private residences, while car budgets will be capped at R700 000.
Flying business class is also a thing of the past, with minister having to make do in economy class.
“In line with the need to be circumspect on the fiscal constraints we find ourselves in and to ensure fiscal prudence, cabinet referred the Guide for Members of the Executive back to a committee of ministers, to curb costs while not compromising government operations,” says Mchunu.
The ministerial handbook comes at a time where government is struggling with its finances due to a decline in tax revenue and increasing state debt.
