The agency provides internet solutions for several government websites. including the South African Police Service, Home Affairs, Education and Tourism.

Spokesperson Tlali Tlali says the estimated time for restoration is not yet known.

"We are aware that some of the government websites are experiencing a downtime. The incident is related to an unrest and burning of rubble where SITA infrastructure was damaged. Our technical team and service provider have been dispatched to the area to repair the damaged infrastructure so that we can restore services as soon as possible."

The issue has also affected the City of Tshwane's online services.

"The implication is that the city’s e-services, such as electricity prepaid vending system and other related online services are down, which means that electricity prepaid customers won’t be able to vend," says the city's Selby Bokaba.

"The downtime has also affected call centre lines. SITA is still assessing the cause and will customers have updated on the developments, and the estimated restoration time."
