Eastern Cape police are investigating the death of a boy who was mauled by two family-owned pit bulls in Gelvandale on Monday.

The 10-year-old boy was at his home without adult supervision together with two of his friends when the dogs attacked him.

At this stage it is not clear what caused the two dogs to turn on the boy.

Police spokesperson Priscilla Naidu says they had to shoot the dogs to gain entry into the house as the dogs were aggressive.

"The boy was living with his uncle and aunt who were not at home at the time, we are not investigating negligence at this time, but an inquest. If any information does unfold during the cause of the investigation police will then consider additional charges.

"The dogs were put off and anti-animal cruelty association will be doing its own investigation."

The boy was declared dead on the scene by paramedics.

The dogs were also declared dead by the local SPCA.
