Gqeberha man accused of killing dog owner remanded in custody

A 30-year-old man from Gqeberha has been charged with murder after an argument over a dog turned deadly.
Eastern Cape police spokesperson Priscilla Naidu says on Friday night an altercation broke out on Friday evening between the suspect and 32-year-old Riaan Marais.
She says the suspect approached Marais on behalf of his girlfriend, to complain about his dog, when the argument became heated.
Naidu says the suspect allegedly picked up a knife before stabbing Marais once in his head.
She says they were informed about the incident from hospital on Saturday and were unable to get a statement from Marais as he was in critical condition.
Later on the same day the suspect went to the Kabega Park police station to open up a case of assault against Marais but was then arrested on a charge of attempted murder.
She says Marais died from his injuries on Monday morning and the charge was changed to a murder investigation.
Naidu says the breed of dog cannot yet be confirmed, nor the exact particulars of the argument.
The suspect, who has been remanded in custody, will appear in the magistrates court again on Tuesday for a bail application.
