Team leader for the Extended Public Works Programme (EPWP), Mduduzi Mbense, was fatally shot while on duty at the Jabulani Hostel in Johannesburg on Friday morning.
Mbense was leading a team of the Green Army, a team established under the EPWP to tackle illegal dumping and litter-picking, at the hostel.
He worked and stayed at the hostel where he was shot and killed at about 10am on Friday.
Gauteng Member of the Executive Committee (MEC) for Social Development, Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment, Mbali Hlophe, has called on police to leave no stone unturned to catch the killers.
“We are gravely devastated for this untimely loss. I wish to extend my heartfelt condolences to the family, friends and colleagues. May you all find strength and comfort during this difficult time,” she said.
The Department has committed to provide psychosocial support to Mbense’s colleagues.
Our thoughts and prayers are with the Mbense family and friends in this trying times. RIP Mduduzi Mbense. #GDARDCares #GrowingGautengTogether pic.twitter.com/NONGhGVxoD
