Green Connection: Govt out of touch with climate change
Updated | By Mapaballo Borotho
The Green Connection believes the three-day Africa Energy Indaba in Cape Town proved how out of touch the government is with climate change.

During the event, Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy Gwede Mantashe said South Africa would draw investment in a range of energy technologies from the private sector, including renewables, coal, nuclear and gas, which he said was a critical part of South Africa’s energy transition.

"Mantashe is putting much more effort into pushing for more carbon-emitting fossil fuel investments,” said the organisation's Lisa Makaula.
"And while the minister seemed to brag that the National Petroleum Company will be in action next year, there was no mention of a National Renewable Energy Company, which is where we should be headed instead of adding more fossil fuels.
"The fact of the matter is, South Africa’s energy outlook still includes too much fossil fuels – which is making climate change worse – and not enough renewables, which is better suited.”
