Gauteng Education Member of the Executive Council (MEC) Matome Chiloane has expressed his sadness by the passing of a Grade 12 educator from Hyde Park Secondary School in Johannesburg on Wednesday.
Gauteng Department of Basic Education spokesperson, Steve Mabona says according to their information, the teacher was allegedly found hanging on the sports grounds of the school on Wednesday morning.
"Paramedics certified him dead on arrival."
Police are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.
In another incident, a Grade 11 boy from Jeppe High School for Boys in Johannesburg passed away on Tuesday after a rugby match with Hoërskool Die Anker in Brakpan.
Mabona says it is alleged that the learner was not feeling well after the match.
"Paramedics on site tried to stabilise him and contacted an ambulance for further medical assistance. Unfortunately, the learner succumbed shortly after the ambulance arrived."
He says the Psycho-Social Support Unit has been dispatched to Hyde Park Secondary School and Jeppe High School for Boys for necessary trauma counselling and support.
"We are grateful to the South African Depression and Anxiety Group (SADAG) for also availing their services for additional support at these schools," said Mabona.
"We are deeply disheartened by these tragic incidents and wish to extend our most sincerest condolences to the families of the departed, as well as their respective school communities," added MEC Chiloane.
