Greenpeace Africa says it is disappointed by the climate change agreement reached by world leaders at the COP26 Summit in Glasgow to reduce the greenhouse gasses.

The Glasgow Climate Pact is the first-ever climate deal to explicitly plan to reduce coal, the worst fossil fuel for greenhouse gases.

Climate and Energy Campaigner Nhlanhla Sibisi says they wanted a total phase-out of fossil fuels.

“As Greenpeace we were hoping that they would phase-out fossil fuel, coal being one of the main contributors to climate change. Overall, we can say that having a deal is better than not having a deal, but we are still disappointed with the outcome.

“The intention is to keep the temperature at 1.5 C or less, and the latest study shows that the current rate could be 2.7 and this could affect countries that are less developed, we will continue to ask countries like South Africa to respect the science and implement those measures.”

Meanwhile, South Africa climate change chief negotiator Malesela Kekana says they are happy with the outcomes which include restoring trust amongst parties.

“We have in essence restored trust amongst parties through a balanced set of outcomes on mitigation, adaptation, and finance. We have also managed launch work programme on the global goal of adaptation, we also agreed on new collective goal on climate finance to run until 2025.”

The deal also presses for more urgent emission cuts and promises more money for developing countries - to help them adapt to climate impacts.
