Gumede, co-accused corruption case back in court

State prosecutors have reiterated they're ready to get the Durban Solid Waste corruption case off the ground.

Former eThekwini mayor Zandile Gumede and her 21 co-accused will line up in the Durban Magistrate's Court again on Thursday. 

A pre-trial hearing's been scheduled after the matter was pushed back to Thursday.

KZN's NPA spokesperson Natasha Kara says the State's indicated its readiness to proceed with the case. 

There've been several delays, with some accused struggling to settle their legal bills being the most recent one.

"On the last appearance, the matter was adjourned for legal representation for two of the accused persons, as well as representations and an objection to the charges, lodged by another. 


"Gumede and others face several charges, including conspiracy to commit corruption, corruption, fraud, money laundering, and contravention of the Municipal Finance Management Act amounting to over R300 million."
