Gun-toting Cape teen ‘could be involved in gangsterism’
Updated | By Lulutho Mkosi
The City of Cape Town says a 13-year-old boy found in possession of a firearm outside a local school could have been involved in gang-related activities.
The boy was taken into custody after he was searched by the city’s metro police.
Acting on a tip-off, the office found the boy to be in possession of a gun.
The City of Cape Town's mayoral committee member for safety and security, JP Smith, says the boy initially claimed to have picked up the firearm.
“Community members allege that the boy had been sent to target another boy and given the firearm by some criminal elements or gangsters. However, this has not been confirmed.
“The Department of Social Development will need to intervene through the social workers because he is a minor.”
The boy is currently in police custody.
Smith has urged the police to identify the individuals who gave the minor a firearm.
