Updated | By Neo Motloung
A 32-year-old waiter has been arrested for duplicating patrons’ bank cards at a Midstream Estate restaurant in Olifantsfontein, north of Johannesburg.
The incident was reported to the Hawks by the Banks Forensic Investigation after the unit noticed suspicious transactions at the restaurant.
Hawks spokesperson Ndivhuwo Mulamu says investigations led to cops to the 32-year-old waiter.
"Investigation revealed that the restaurant’s waiter allegedly duplicated the clients’ bank cards details to purchase goods at local retailers in Gauteng which brought about clients’ loss of approximately R50 600, collectively," says Mulamu.
When the waiter was arrested on Thursday, he was found with a card skimming device and pin numbers allegedly belonging to the cloned clients’ bank cards.
The suspect is expected to appear in the Kempton Park Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday.
He is facing charges of fraud and theft.
